These three electron microscopy images of stented arteries show a difference in healing response between the three drug-eluting stents available in the United States. Twenty-one days after stent implantation, 75 percent of the (a) Endeavor stent struts are covered with new tissue, compared with approximately 50 percent for the (b) Taxus stent from Boston Scientific and 30 percent for the (c) Cypher stent from Johnson & Johnson. Foreign bodies exposed to the bloodstream increase the likelihood of the formation of dangerous blood clots.

The Attain Ability® left-heart lead (Model 4196) is now available for use with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices for heart failure patients. Attain Ability has the thinnest lead body of any left-heart lead currently available, providing physicians with a tool to deliver therapy directly to hard-to-reach areas of the heart. Attain Ability incorporates insulation material developed by NASA Langley Research Center that was previously evaluated for space applications, high-performance engines and harsh environments. This application marks the first time a NASA-developed material has been used in this kind of implantable medical device.

In addition to the United States, the Attain Ability lead is available in Europe, Japan, Canada, and Australia. The Attain Ability lead is compatible with the Attain family of exclusive delivery tools including the Attain Select II, the Attain Hybrid® Guide Wires and Attain Command™ - the newest family of left-heart lead delivery catheters now available in the United States and Canada. As part of Medtronic´s fully integrated CRT system, the entire Attain portfolio, including the Attain StarFix® left-heart lead, can be used with Medtronic´s Vision 3D™ portfolio of wireless CRT-Ds.

The Medtronic Attain StarFix® OTW (over-the-wire) lead (Model 4195) is the first-ever active fixation left-heart lead for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and has demonstrated a zero percent chronic dislodgement rate.

The Medtronic Attain StarFix steroid-eluting unipolar lead has a 5-French diameter and is available in 78, 88 and 103 cm. lengths. The Attain StarFix´s unique design includes three soft, polyurethane lobes near the lead tip that, when expanded, enable stable lead placement in the target location. The soft, pliable lobes, which can be deployed to up to a 24-French diameter - about one quarter inch - can be relaxed multiple times to allow for acute repositioning of the lead as necessary. Once deployed, the electrode is securely fixed in place, reducing the potential for dislodgement.

The Attain StarFix lead, which will be commercially available nationwide in late summer 2008, is designed to complement the Attain Model 4193 and Model 4194 over-the-wire leads. The Attain® catheters along with the Attain Hybrid® Guide Wires are used to deliver leads for precise placement in a wide variety of coronary anatomies. It can be used with any Medtronic CRT-defibrillator (CRT-D), including those within the company´s new Vision 3D™ portfolio. The new Vision 3D wireless ICD and CRT-D portfolio offers unparalleled depth and breadth of unique clinical options that are built on our industry leading pacing and ICD exclusives.

The Medtronic Reveal® DX insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) continuously monitors the heart´s electrical activity in order to help physicians diagnose whether or not symptoms such as fainting, dizziness and unexplained seizure-like episodes have a cardiovascular cause. Placed just under the skin of the chest area using local anesthesia during a simple outpatient procedure, the Reveal DX monitor records important cardiac rhythm data, which may help a physician to diagnose the patient so the appropriate treatment can be undertaken. The device weighs just 15 grams and is approximately the size of a memory stick; unlike a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, there are no leads (tiny wires) that extend from the device into the heart´s chamber(s). To store an electrocardiogram (ECG) at the time of an episode, a patient places a hand-held, pager-sized activator over the device, and presses a button. Later a physician analyzes the stored information and determines if the episode was caused by an abnormal heart rhythm.
