|Medtronic Extends Sponsorship of Twin Cities Marathon, TC 10 Mile and Affiliated Youth Events|
Strong Partnership in Promoting Healthy Lifestyles Continues for Three Additional Years
MINNEAPOLIS – October 3, 2012 –Medtronic and Twin Cities In Motion, the organizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, today announced a three-year agreement that will keep Medtronic as the title sponsor of four premier Twin Cities In Motion events: TC 1 Mile, TC Family Events, TC 10 Mile, and the Twin Cities Marathon. Additionally, Medtronic will continue to support the Medtronic TC Kids Marathon, a nationally recognized youth running program that promotes exercise, wellness and healthy lifestyles.
Since Medtronic became title sponsor of the four events in 2006, Twin Cities In Motion has seen event participation increase more than 82 percent. And a recent Twin Cities survey shows that 21 percent of the population is jogging or running, a 25 percent increase since 2009. The demand for running has prompted Twin Cities In Motion to offer nine additional events that occur throughout the year, in addition to marathon weekend.
“This partnership clearly has enabled us to do more to help promote health and fitness in Minnesota,” said Virginia Brophy Achman, Twin Cities In Motion executive director. “Not only do we see an overall increase in running, we see more kids and their families trying running for the first time. It’s great to see so many people incorporate physical activity into their lives.”
More than 5,000 children participate annually in one of three Medtronic TC Kids Marathon events, and have run a collective 286,000 miles since the program’s inception in 2006. According to Twin Cities In Motion, nearly half of the event participants are children at risk from traditionally underrepresented communities.
“We support ‘Healthy Medtronic Communities’ worldwide, and that commitment starts right here in our hometown,” says Dr. Jacob Gayle, executive director of the Medtronic Foundation, vice president Medtronic community affairs. “The marathon and related races not only help encourage physical activity, they represent world-class events that the entire community can celebrate, adding to our overall quality of life.”
In addition to the event sponsorship, Medtronic partners with Twin Cities In Motion to manage the Medtronic Global Heroes program, which celebrates runners from around the world who have a medical device to treat conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain and spinal and neurological disorders. This year 25 runners will be participating in the program representing nine countries. And in 2012, Medtronic also delivered sudden cardiac arrest response training to Twin Cities In Motion volunteers and medical staff as part of the Foundation’s HeartRescue Project.
